Tyre Creel Room & Wire Storage

Impact of Uncontrolled Humidity

During the manufacturing process of radial tyres, the presence of high humidity leads to rusting of steel wires and loss of strength. Rusting prevents proper bonding between the steel and rubber, resulting in a large rejection rate.

Consequences of High Humidity

High humidity in the Creel Room leads to rusting of steel wires, resulting in significant rejection rates and loss of strength. Rusting also prevents proper bonding between the steel and rubber.

Additional Effects

The radial tyre is an improvement over the conventional/bias tyre due to the placement of piles and the addition of belts. Radial tyres offer longer life, lower fuel consumption, greater riding comfort, and better skid resistance. However, the rusting of steel belts over time can lead to quicker wear and tear. Proper manufacturing practices, including humidity control, are essential to prevent rusting during the bonding process.

Causes of Uncontrolled Humidity

Manufacturers use various processes to prepare multilayer tyres. The room where steel wires are covered with fabric and converted into a single bonded ribbon, which is then braided, is called the Creel Room. High humidity in this room leads to rusting of steel wires. Additionally, the area surrounding the Creel Room may have higher temperature and humidity than normal ambient conditions.

Recommendation

Relative humidity in the Creel Room must be maintained between 20±5% at 25±5°C.

Solution

Josem Solution

Josem has installed several dehumidifiers in Creel Rooms for well-known tyre companies, maintaining conditions of 20±5% RH. The process involves:

Calculating moisture load considering the total area where various wires of fabric and steel pass to the winding machine.

Introducing sufficient make-up air to provide positive pressure in the space.

Ensuring that the cord leaving the Creel Room is at a temperature above the dewpoint temperature of the ambient air it will pass through to prevent moisture condensation.

The use of desiccant dehumidifiers in Creel Rooms ensures the steel cord is protected, resulting in a lasting bond that enhances the durability of radial tyres. This adherence to quality manufacturing practices has made it possible for tyres incorporating superior radial tyre technology to have a longer life than conventional tyres.
